The recordings on this disc are pretty good. However, the editors selected only the *loud* parts, as indicated by the title. I was pretty disappointed to find that the pieces are, in many cases, edited to reflect the most famous themes, etc, instead of including the whole work. In general, I would recommend this to the classical music novice, or someone who wants to expand their knowledge of classical music in general. Those who already are familiar with these pieces will probably feel gypped.

This is the best collection of moving classics on one CD that I have ever seen. The only drawback is that 25 pieces in 75 minutes means each piece averages 3 minutes. However, I prefer that to less pieces.

I am a 33 year old woman who has been a classical music lover for virtually my entire life. I found 'Beethoven's Wig' quite by accident while browsing on Amazon, and after listening to the snippets provided, I was laughing so hard that I knew I had to buy it. What a wonderful way to get young children interested in music! And of course, it's not only for children. I actually bought this as a present for my mother, who has been a classical music lover HER whole life (and who would [be so upset] if I revealed her age), and she was tickled pink by it!

It's actually an old tradition to mate "fun" lyrics to classical music in order to make the music easy to learn. My mother tells me how she learned 'Morning' from the 'Peer Gynt Suite' as 'Morning is dawning/And Peer Gynt is yawning/Under a statue of Grieg', and I myself know two crazy versions of the 'Soldier's Chorus' from 'Faust'. This CD is an absolute tour de force of entertainment and education, powered by lyric writing of exceptional craft and imagination that can be appreciated by all ages, from toddlers to the great grandparents. It evokes a century of musical storytelling, in the most whimsical and clever traditions spanning Gilbert & Sullivan to Tin Pan Alley to the best of Sesame Street.

Lyricist and singer Richard Perlmutter is clearly someone who understands children as well as he understands music, and his love and passion for both fairly burst through the speakers on every track. Fur Elise alone is worth the price of the CD. When I was rather young, just four or five years old, my mother got me started listening to classical music by numerous composers. I can't help but think of the fond memories I have of those days with my mom as we listened together and she taught me to appreciate this fine music. Therefore I sincerely believe this CD is a good purchase for children who are just beginning to get acquainted with classical music.

The first part of the CD preps the child to be receptive to classical music by the use of some fun and silly lyrics (which are well written) to go along with the music excerpts. As the CD tracks progress the same music is played again--but this time without the silly lyrics--to get the child to hear the beauty of the music. I think this is a valuable tool to entice kids to listen to and appreciate classical music. Children need to be exposed to the arts and this CD helps accomplish that.

Pardon my shouting, but it's true. All the accolades this disc receives are warranted, and more. The playing on Appalachian Spring is pure, impassioned, eternal. No wonder Copland won the Pulitzer for it in 1945. It's just incredible. This recording of the Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo is DEFINITIVE. Every nuance and outburst of joyous energy in Buckaroo Holiday and Hoe Down is perfect. No one has done it better. And while Billy the Kid is "harder to mess up" in my opinion, I still haven't found a better reading of it than this one.

Just a couple of caveats, though. If you want the COMPLETE ballets for Appalachian Spring, Rodeo, and Billy the Kid, you will NOT find them here. These are the suites. For the complete Appalachian Spring (all 36 minutes in one track), I recommend Michael Tilson Thomas' version on a CD with the San Francisco Symphony called The Populist. And for complete versions of the other two, you need look no further than Leonard Slatkin's recordings... Read more

There are many recordings I have heard of these classic Copland works, conducted by such luminaries as Zubin Mehta, Donald Johanos, Morton Gould, even Eugene Ormandy. But none of these conductors knew the music of Aaron Copland better than his friend of 53 years, Leonard Bernstein, who Copland many times said conducted his music as if he had written it himself. No disc displays the tenderness and vivacity of Copland's Americana better than Bernstein and the Philharmonic's sensational performances of "Appalachian Spring," "Rodeo," and "Billy the Kid." These are works I know by heart, but it takes some doing for specific performances to make me emotional, and the fading last strains of "Appalachian" did it on my first listening test. The sound quality is top-notch, even for these recordings from 1959-1961. Look no further than Bernstein - who knew Copland better than anyone else - to deliver the finest recordings of these works ever... Read more

I've owned this CD since before its rerelease as part of the "Bernstein Century" series and have always treasured it. There are who-knows-how-many Copland recordings out there and I can honestly say this is the best I've yet heard. Although my musical taste hasn't always gravitated toward this sort of music, there's an unmistakable sincerity in Copland that speaks to me as an American and a lover of both folk and art music... is there any moment in all classical music history quite like the inception of "The Gift to Be Simple" in Appalachian Spring? Copland is never sappy, and can be quite muscular and rhythmically charged as much as lyrical and folksy. And Bernstein, a composer in this American tradition himself (arguably in some repertoire a true disciple of Copland), is the right conductor for these pieces. I'm still amazed at what a strong and yet immmediately comprehensible piece "Billy the Kid" is, equal to Appalachian Spring... Rodeo... Read more
