In February 2001 the Berlin Philharmonic and Claudio Abbado were guests at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome with all of Beethoven's symphonies. Their success was overwhelming: ther were standing ovations after each performance and the critics spoke of seminal moments in the history of music. The video recordings of this event are now available in an exclusive box set, including a special multi-angle feature: the DVDs offer sequences from the 'conductor camera' and show the maestr Read More »

By general consensus, Herbert von Karajan's first (1963) Beethoven cycle for Deutsche Grammophon is the best of the four (!) that he recorded. The Berlin Philharmonic was in top form, and they had not yet made an artistic fetish out of the bland smoothness that typified the conductor's later recordings of this music (and just about everything else). Karajan's squeaky clean, emotionally cool Beethoven will always be something of an acquired taste, but this set makes the best possible case f Read More »

I agree with the Amazon reviewer that, of all Karajan's Beethoven traversals, this one is the best, and I also believe it serves as a great introduction to Beethoven's symphonies as a whole. Like any interpretation of such well-loved works, there will always be a few points of disagreement, but overall Karajan's vision prevails. And at this price, one can certainly afford to augment this collection here and there with another conductor's interpretation.
Every symphony here bears the trademark Van Karajan clarity and precision, but unlike his later recordings of Beethoven, there is also plenty of fire and passion. I really like the tempos he chooses for the fifth and the seventh (my favorite). Ever since I bought Karajan's 1963 interpretations of these two a number of years ago, I've never really liked any other conductor's treatment of the finales of these two symphonies, Karajan's seem that perfectly done to me. The first, second, fourth, and eighth are all excellent... Read more

Over his 35year tenure with the Berlin Philharmonic Herbert von Karajan recorded 4 complete Beethoven symphony cycles. This 1963 one is his masterpiece. Just as there are people who like either the even- or the odd-numbered symphonies better, this set will not please everybody in every single aspect, but it is as good as anybody can get on an artistic proposition of this format. The cycle conveys a very clear artistic vision. Probably better than anything else Karajan ever recorded it epitomizes the unique sound he was able to create with 'his' Philhramonic. This makes the cycle very homogenous, all symphonies have the same overall very high quality. In contrast to some of his very early Viennese recordings, his pace is quicker, and as always he creates a wonderful transparency of sound. My personal favorites are #7 and #9, the latter is done wonderfully both in terms of soloists and choir. An extremely moving experience. The sound quality of this '63 recording is very good, but with... Read more

This 1963 recording has been remastered twice. (It's been "reissued" a zillion times but I think it's only been "remastered" 2 times.) The version you should get depends on the amount of money you want to spend and the level of sound fidelity you're looking for.
-- ASIN # B000001GBQ: this item you're looking at DG429036; the least expensive version (also same as import package ASIN # B000056OBA)
-- ASIN # B000001GZ4: 1997 remaster DG453701 (done as part of the special 87-disc 20-volume Beethoven Complete Edition). This version is about $25 more and also has a nice color book with history and photos. Used "Original-ImageBit-Processing" technology.
-- ASIN # B0000C03AH: 2003 remaster to SACD DG474600. This version at a hundred+ bucks is 4 times the cost of the basic set.
(And no doubt in the future there will be another remaster using another whizbang technology like "holographic projection" sound.)

Johann Sebastian Bach relied on the oboe to voice some of the most exquisite instrumental passages in his cantatas and orchestral works, these solo parts adding up to what Heinz Holliger terms a "miraculous wealth" of music for the oboe. Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis - the latest ECM New Series release by Holliger, one of the world's consummate oboists for five decades now, as well as a prize-winning composer and conductor - presents a collection of this music drawn from the sinfonia introductions Read More »

I bought this for "music appreciation" education for my 6 yr. old. I thought it would be challenging to get him, as well as my 2 1/2 and 1 1/2 yr. olds, to let me play it in the car. I also thought it would bore and/or irritate my husband -- so I was nervous a bit. Well, I was completely wrong. We all "love" it.
It is high quality and pleasant to the ears. We play it whenever we are in the car. The narratives in "Peter and the Wolf" and "Carnival of the Animals" are very engaging and hold their attention. At home, my 6 yr. old sits at the dinner table and recites the entire narrative (along with the appropriate tune representing the characters) of Peter and the Wolf -- complete with Bernstein's accent! Great memory/recitation exercise and he does it voluntarily. My two year old asks for it EVERY TIME we're in the car and many times my 1 1/2 yr. old is fussy until we turn it on, then she's as content as can be.
All the kids have picked out characters to... Read more

Bernstein's comments and his way of narrating the first two pieces (Carnival of the Animals and Peter and the Wolf) was a wonderful way to add to this grand music. I was surprised by his free approach to the music. If you want to hear more of him, Copland's Second Hurricane has him narrating. It's not that great musically though (the Copland). The Britten piece is a favorite for the Children's Special on my local radio station, WGMS 103.5 in DC, along with the other two. Yes, this is a good CD to buy for you and your children. It also features a couple of soon to be hit players such as the acclaimed Paula Robison on the flute. Bernstein had good tastes when it came to picking musicians who are all between the age of 13-23.

My mother bought a vinyl copy of this for my sister and me when we were young. We practically wore it out from constant listening. It also didn't help that we "ballet" danced around the living room while the record was playing. Delighted to know that this recording is now in CD form. Still find the music, and Bernstien's narration, charming.

Following on his hugely successful Beethoven recording project - which spanned the complete sonatas and concertos as well as the Diabelli Variations - pianist Paul Lewis returns to Franz Schubert - a key focus of both his concert career and discography. On this double album, three late sonatas are accompanied by the Impromptus and Klavierstücke - two sets of short pieces brimming with inventiveness. Read More »

This review is from: Schubert: Piano Sonatas, Impromptus & Klavierstucke, d. 840, 850, 894, 899, 946 (Audio CD)
The astoundingly musical Paul Lewis goes from strength to strength. With these three sonatas, he's now recorded eight Schubert sonatas, the Trout quintet, piano duos with Steven Osborne, and the three Lieder cycles with Mark Padmore. His Schubert can bear comparison to the best we have, from Schnabel, Edwin Fischer, his mentor Brendel, Uchida, Kempff, Lili Kraus, Curzon, Richter, Horowitz, and anyone else you can think of. His label Harmonia Mundi had already a complete Schubert cycle by Alain Planes. but the success of Lewis's complete Beethoven sonatas, concertos, and recent Diabelli Variations has encouraged them to record more Schubert with him. He's playing the cycle of Schubert's mature work in five recitals around the world, of which I've heard three in Chicago. The magic holds. I couldn't sleep if I didn't have these CDs safely under the roof and can wear out shoes listening to them.

Paul Lewis continues to bring us his passion for the music of Franz Schubert with this new recording. He has stated ''Schubert writes something that comes from another planet' and when we hear Lewis perform Schubert either in the concert hall or on recordings we must agree. This 38 year old British pianist is inordinately sensitive, humble, dashingly handsome and completely at the service of the composer. The following excerpt includes his concepts: 'He is more faithful to a score than many, and one feels while listening to him play as close as is possible to a direct communication with the intentions of a composer. This is by design, and essential to Lewis's notions of his performances and his own stardom. "Sometimes, I go to a concert and what I notice is the performer more than what they are playing. I see them putting on a show - I understand it, and there are people who do that, but it's not what I try to do. It's too easy for it to become all about the performer. Yes, it's... Read more

I've heard grown men, those with a good knowledge of music, complaining that Schubert's instrumental music can be too long-winded and too repetitive. This sparkling, lively recording will cure anyone (almost anyone?) of that notion. In Paul Lewis's hands, Schubert is alive and well. The only regrets it elicits are regrets that Schubert didn't live longer than his 31 years to produce more tuneful pieces for Mr. Lewis to perform. Brilliant! A thrilling release.
