This is one recording that lives up to its hype. On the podium, Fritz Reiner brings all of his storied strengths - an extraordinary sense of architecture, an outstanding ear for color, and an unparalleled (did someone say "sadistic"?) degree of discipline - to create the most beautifully conceived "Pictures" recorded in the 20th century.
But that's not all - in fact, that's not the half of it. The Chicago Symphony is superhuman in this recording, from the phenomonal opening solo trumpet passage of Adolph Herseth (in the first of his FIVE decades with the CSO) to the spectacular "Bydlo" of Arnold Jacobs on tuba, to the stupefying wall of sound in the final "Great Gate of Kiev" - well, the fact is that almost every orchestral player I know, on ANY instrument, refers to this recording as the gold standard for their own.

Reiner had the uncanny ability to excel in virtually every orchestral piece he ever committed to any ensemble, either in concert or on a recording. This CD, a combination of two early RCA Living Stereo LPs, had "Pictures" on its own apart from the other pieces that fill it out, under the name of "A Festival of Russian Music." In addition to impeccable playing, the Chicago Symphony sounds as great as it ever has in these pieces. In "Pictures," notable is the powerful orchestral buildup in "Bydlo," and the great woodwind playing in "Ballet of the Chicks in their Shells." The reknown Chicago brass are not to be ignored in "Great Gate of Kiev." The other pieces are notable for a house-shaking bass drum in "Night on Bald Mountain" and "Marche Slave".
In short, another installment in the phenomenal output of Reiner and Chicago.

What a treat for the ears!
The Living Stereo series was wonderful then and it's even better now. There are two releases of this album, this 2 channel CD and a hybrid SACD with both this CD's track and a 3 channel version, which is how it was originally recorded. If you have a player that can handle it, I strongly recommend you get the SACD.
Although this review used the hybrid SACD it applies to both.
This release has fantastic sound quality and, thankfully, is completely true to both music and the original recording. Originally recorded in "3 channel stereo" that's what you get here--no, there's nothing in the rear channels of the surround mix but that's exactly the way it should be. Taken directly from the nearly 50-year old (!) masters, the engineers did nothing at all to the sound except digitize and transfer each track to the SACD/CD master. Nothing added, nothing subtracted. As a previous reviewer noted, Fischer decided to take the outer movements faster than is typical. For me, this meant that, after beginning to listen to the brisk first movement of the D minor Double, it wasn't quite love at first listen. The ear can rebel against what it's not used to. However, I soon came to appreciate Fischer's approach and style, and I became a fan of this disc. I found the E major in particular -- a piece you might think you know all too well -- to be unexpectedly exciting, and, in the slow movement, just gorgeous. The danger with speed on these is that one risks sapping them of their inherent drama and beauty. Some self-consciously period-correct recordings I've heard fall into this trap, and the result is awfully noisy and unattractive. Fischer and her fellow performers, with this non-period recording, avoid this pitfall with perfect precision, balance, and appropriately restrained, just-right sensitivity.
Folks: I'm going against the grain of prior reviewers here, but be aware, if you like the outer movements of Bach's Concertos played at a somewhat more leisurely pace then this disc might disappoint. To me they are being played at breakneck speed. I'm left with enjoying the beauty of the playing in the slow movements but cannot listen to the the concertos as a whole and say these have a special place. For me, the sheer speed disfigures the music.

For someone who knows little about Bach and wants to learn something, you couldn't do better than to give them this CD. Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra give their signature warm, plush sound to the work of the great Johann Sebastian Bach, making him sound very nearly like a Romantic rather than a baroque or classical composer. This is not a bad thing--some complain that Bach, with his mathematical leanings, leaves them cold. That isn't possible with the inviting material on this CD.

Nothing much I can say about this one - the assortment of the pieces is good, but I was rather disappointed to discover that Sleepers, Wake! was not indeed the organ version I sought so hard (if you've ever heard it live, you know what I'm talking about). Music is good, but because of the variety, does not set a single mood - pieces vary in tone -- I find myself listening to one or two tracks, then switching back and forth.

I bought Vol.1 of this offering on vinyl as a poor college student some few (!) years ago. Now I am delighted to find the whole thing! It is an excellent collection with which to introduce people, especially high school students, to Bach's range of work., plus it offers performances by some of the best conductors, artists and orchestras of their day.
