`Glorious Pipes' takes the listener on a wonderful journey to the most exquisite pipe organs in the world! The beautiful organs featured in this lovely 2-CD recording sound majestic and powerful, and quite frankly make me feel tiny! There are many goodies here by well-known, as well as lesser-known composers and performers. It opens with Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, which is hauntingly beautiful. It is played in a way with which I was unfamiliar and feels very dark indeed. I have read that Ton Koopman, the organist on this piece, strives for authenticity so that the hearer experiences how it would most likely have been played when originally composed. The sound quality of these masterpieces is astounding! The organs presented here are as fierce as thunder and as gentle as butterflies. This is a 2-CD set with 20 music selections. The music is splendidly performed by several different organists on equally as many different magnificent pipe organs in several cathedrals and music venues throughout the world. There are masterwork selections that will be familiar to anyone who has ever heard one of these grand organs play at concert and there are selections that are not so well known that are included (I assume) that display an organist's fine skills. The CD is certainly a good buy and I recommend it to anyone who loves pipe organ music played on the world's finest instruments.

There is one thing glaringly missing on this CD, and I cannot understand why the producers of this CD chose to omit it. The CD is a collection of numbers from several previously released organ CDs. The booklet narrative accompanying this CD goes into sufficient detail about the musical selection being played, the composer with given selection title and number, hints to the reader as to... As a musician who has both conducted and sung several of the pieces on this CD, I truly appreciate what Shaw is able to extract from his singers. Every piece shows the fine attention to detail that is the hallmark of any Shaw recording. His treatment of the "O Magnum" is spiritual, the piece has become for me one of the true choral masterpieces, and no one can create the sound like Shaw does here. His treatment of the Thompson "Alleluia" is outstanding as well.

Aside from the O Magnum, two other pieces are worth noting: the "Ave Maria" exemplifies what Shaw is able to accomplish with men's voices, almost to the point that you think there has to be some secret that only he knows. Probably the most enjoyable piece for me on the recording is the "What is this lovely fragrance?". Here Shaw takes a very simple, lush carol and transforms it into a work of art, as only he can do.

This is the finest recording of Britten's A Ceremony of Carols I've ever come across, and there are plenty of versions to choose from. The King's College Choir rendition suffers from overstuffed acoustics, a constant with that choir, and their recording of Ceremony of Carols falls short in the requisite rhythmic clarity and intensity. The Christ Church, Oxford version is plodding, and lacks sparkle. Harry Christopher's The Sixteen come close, with marvelous sonics and ecstatic diction, but fall apart in the exacting 'This Little Babe' round with uneven cohesion, and strange stressed notes that ruin the waterfall effect so felicitously construed by Britten. I've not heard Britten's own conducted version, but he scrupulously insisted on boy trebles, and it's difficult if not impossible to conjure a more perfect rendering than the one given here by Shaw and his Chamber Singers. This is an astounding collection! As a choral singer, I'm familiar with and love many of the classic pieces on this CD, and I've never heard them done better! As a Christmas music and classical music lover, I'm delighted by the inspired creativity and imagination shown by selecting these particular pieces. I never would have thought to put them together in one CD, but they work so well together! This is pretty much the very best Christmas CD I've ever heard.

Robert Shaw was a genius at getting exactly the sound he wanted from his groups. Although I've sung and heard sung Randall Thompson's Alleleuia many times before, I've never heard it done with such sensitivity and emotion before. I was stunned by the prayerful, pleading, exultant performance of this piece, and it brought tears to my eyes. O Magnum Mysterium also was done with powerful emotion, reminding me once again how music can touch our hearts and souls.

I wish I could give this recording SIX stars.

Doubtless, the ninth remains one of the best musical pieces of all time and, alas, one of the least performed in public. Indeed, such live performances were, and still are, so infrequent that George Bernard Shaw deemed them "extraordinary events separated by years". It may be that it is difficult and technically demanding (but then all Beethoven music is), but it is most likely because it's so passionate and emotionally demanding. You must have abundant personal and professional attributes to conduct a magnun opus the size of Choral Symphony and Arturo Toscanini has them both at his best in this 1952 recording. Although he was 85 years old at that time, he vigorously projects beauty, warmth and youth aplenty. It is a magnificent recording, one you cannot listen to and feel the same afterwards.

Arturo Toscanini (1867-1957) spent much of his conducting career trying to give a "definitive" performance of Beethoven's ninth symphony. He conducted the symphony numerous times; it wasn't until 1952 that he was sufficiently satisfied with a recording of this major work to authorize a commercial release.

Toscanini had hated to record during the days of 78-rpm discs. Each 12-inch record side played a little under five minutes, so it was necessary for the conductor and musicians to stop periodically while the master was changed. Only in the United Kingdom, where Toscanini made recordings with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, did a record producer (Fred Gaisberg) come up with a system using two recording machines, so that Toscanini and the musicians did not have to stop.

Toscanini was very happy when RCA Victor began using magnetic sound film to record his sessions with the NBC Symphony. Then, in 1948, RCA switched to magnetic tape. With both processes, continuous... Read more

This recording of Beethoven's 9th Symphony brings us Toscanini at the pinnacle of his career and the most mature stage of his life. It is also the only recording he ever made of this piece, even though he conducted it numerous times and was well known for it. While the recording limitations of 1952 are noticeable, the mood and impact of the piece are not affected at all.

The complex instrumental passages are clear and crisp, interpretted by a true master, leading us ever onward to the climax of the 4th movement where the piece explodes with the typical energy of the Robert Shaw Chorale. The lyrics are clear and filled with breathtaking dynamic variations, accurately depicting the boundless joy for which the piece was named.

This recording of Beethoven's 9th is a 'Gold Standard' to which all other conductors strive. No collection of great works would be complete without it.
