"I love the extravagance, the sunny glow, the light touch of Scarlatti," says French pianist Alexandre Tharaud, whose second Virgin Classics release is a collection of the composer's captivating and adventurous keyboard sonatas. His first release, the Chopin recital Journal intime, was described by The Guardian as "altogether breathtakingly beautiful". In typically imaginative fashion, Tharaud combined early Romanticism with the Baroque style while touring over the 2009-10 season. His recita Read More »

I had the privilege of seeing Yo Yo Ma in concert here in the U.S. when he was a relative newcomer in the classical world. I was a little girl and I sat in that symphony hall and cried as I watched a man and his instrument become one.
I have not had that sort of emotional response to anything Ma has done since that time, no matter how wonderful and perfect his playing is. That being said, this album made me cry like a baby. In the store. Yes, in public. The level of emotional perfection and purity in Ma's intonality - the gentle caress of each note is simply unmatched. And as other reviewers have already stated, the entire album is consistent.
Yo Yo Ma aside for a moment, I was already fan of some of the pieces on this album before hearing Ma's interpretation. Being familiar with them, I really wondered about their adaptibility to cello performance. What surprised me is that not only does every piece chosen work - but they outdo their original and marvelous... Read more

Ennio Morricone's sense of melody is unsurpassed not only in the world of film, but in Art music and Popular music as well. From the mid-1960's on, when Morricone wrote devestating, original scores for Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns, Morricone's ability to combine classical melodic lines with grunts, whistles, electric guitars and drums often surpassed the films he scored. His music, unlike most film composer's, adds new layers of meaning onto whatever images flash by.
Yo-Yo Ma's melodic feel matches Morricone's evocative melodies; I would have never imagined the cello being an effective vehicle for a Morricone transcription, but now that I hear Ma playing, I hear how obvious and how perfect the congruence sounds. The richness of Morricone's later scores - Cinema Paradiso - The Mission - The Untouchables surround me with a palpable presence that outlives the echoes of the the film's images.
My personal favorite of Morricone's work has always been "The Good,... Read more

Cello sound reminds me a human voice. When I hear a cello, I feel something inside my chest. I cannot explain this, but I feel very deeply the cello voice. It's a very emotional experience for me. That's why I love it very much!
Recently, I discovered, that Yo-Yo Ma plays Morricone. I am sure you know the music of the famous Italian composer Ennio Morricone. Now, imagine all his famous titles are re-arranged for cello and orchestra. CD includes the most relaxing themes from such movies as The Mission, Cinema Paradiso, Once Upon a Time in America, The Untouchables and many others.
I recommend this CD to fans of classical crossover, soundtrack lovers and those who just need to relax with an excellent music.

I am so surprise that there is no one to describe this CD, so that I should explain it for all reviewers how beautiful and especial it's if you want to try or hesitate to buy. I believe someone doubt why you should own it since you had Horowite played Scaraltti with outstanding skills; or some excellent pianoists, ex Pletnev and Schiff also gave us good listenning experience, what Tharaud could give us about different Scarlatti? As to Tharaud's music lover, I had owned his Rameau, and Couperin, and liked his baroque performance, so I expected him going back this period excellent keyborad composer, Scarlatti. I must say that after listenning more times, I never disappointed and apprecated to his poetic expression, which is different to other pianoists, but could give me another kind of listenning enjoying. Of course some Scarlatti popular compositions ex sonata K.380, you will listen more lower speed, however, you will find it's fresh experience of scarlatti. I will recommand this... Read more

This review is from: Scarlatti: Sonatas (Audio CD)
Alexandre Tharaud was born in Paris in 1968, and 'discovered the music scene through his father, a director and singer of operettas, which were put on in theaters of Northern France. At the initiative of his parents, Alexandre started his piano studies at age 5, and he entered Conservatory of the 14th Arrondissement where he met Carmen Taccon-Devenat--a student of Marguerite Long--who became his teacher. He entered the Conservatoire de Paris at age 14 where he won first prize for piano Germaine Mounier when he was 17 years old. With Theodor Paraskivesco, he mastered the piano, and he sought and received the advice of Claude Helffer, Leon Fleisher an Nikita Magaloff. In 1987, he won the International Maria Canals Competition in Barcelona and, a year later, the Senigallia Competition in Italy. In 1989, he received 2nd prize at the Munich International Competition. His career developed quickly in Europe as well as in North America and Japan.' Of interest, he supposedly refuses to keep... Read more

This review is from: Scarlatti: Sonatas (Audio CD)
Though he can play more romantic and contemporary works with passion and grace, I don't think there's a pianist today who can interpret baroque piano as well as Tharaud. And I say this for his concert performances (I have seen him live) and his recordings. I thought his Bach Concertos Italiens on Harmonia Mundi, along with his other HM recordings of Rameau and Couperin were the ultimate, and they are amazing, but this Scarlatti album is incredible. His playing is technically brilliant, but at the same time has so much emotion and beauty to it. This is simply a gorgeous record.

Product Review : Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue; Concerto in F; An American in Paris
This review is from: Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue; Concerto in F; An American in Paris (Audio CD)
To say the least, one can look in their local music store and find the large amount of recordings from reputable (and not so reputable) orchestras playing this famous composition of sassy jazz in the orchestral idiom. But this recently released album of Gershwin's three best known orchestral 'warhorses' so to speak, comes in right at the top of the class and could even be considered all around 'best' in the class too, if it were fair to make such an assumption.
Now having gotten that out of the way, let me go ahead by saying that Thomas, who is usually in top form, is... by no means any different here: Excellent conductor AND pianist (in Rhapsody in Blue). In an earlier Sony recording with the Columbia Jazz Band, the master maestro became very familiar with Gershwin's own playing as the piece was recorded with a piano roll of the composer playing the piano part. Thomas, in this recording with the New World Symphony, shows that he did not forget it as he played with a... Read more

This review is from: Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue; Concerto in F; An American in Paris (Audio CD)
Michael Tilson Thomas is quite possibly the most underrated conductor alive today. His recordings are always astounding in their vision and power. San Francisco, although not the most powerful orchestra around, delivers one of the most convincing and most pleasing sounds today. SFSO is a bit soft on the strings, but the woodwind is marvelous and the brass rivals Chicago. However, it is the level of musicianship that Thomas and SFSO give that is so pleasing. Take, for example, this CD of Gershwin. Thomas and the symphony play these pieces with total conviction, total dedication, total beauty. They treat An American in Paris not like a trivial American showpiece but as a legitimate piece of music. And the result is nothing short of astounding. This digital recording showcases Gershwin's orchestral virtuosity fantastically. Thomas brings light to an often neglected score, allowing the listener in a way to hear An American in Paris for the first time. The brass blast, the winds... Read more
