This is an absolute must-have for all admirers of Russian Romantic repertoire.Of this set, Nos. 1, 3, 6 and 7 have never been surpassed, while the 5th (admittedly a little scrappy now and then) has to be heard to be believed! The finale is whipped into a frenzy and will leave you on the edge of your seat. Nos. 2 and 4 are also very good; only the 8th doesn't quite come up to the high standard of the rest. Don't miss it! [addendum 11/19/2010:] Hallelujah! Since writing this review a while back, I have just discovered that Fedoseyev's cycle has FINALLY been released as a 4-CD set! It is a Russian import on the Venezia label, the catalog number is CDVE04383. Hopefully Amazon will soon offer it for sale. His symphonies echo the brilliant orchestration of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakoff. They are not innovative, but they are powerful, grand, magnificent, crystalline, and very easy listening. They show an easy (and learned) command of counterpoint. My favorite is the Second Symphony, which has a majestic first movement, a gentle, stately second movement, a complex, rhythmically exciting third movement and a fourth movement that is reminiscent of the 1812 Overture. The other symphonies range from lyrical (Fourth and Seventh Symphonies) to grand and remote (Eighth Symphony). All of the performances are informed by Vladimir Fedoseyev's familiarity with Russian musical performance styles and confident leadership of the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra.
