This is an excellent sampler representing every era of Western Music. 1. Humoreske - Robert Schumann 2. City Called Heaven - no composer listed. A beautiful Spiritual with harp and orchestra accompaniment. Not what I usually listen to, but I absolutely loved it. 3. Gayaneh - Aram Khachaturian 4. Caprice 8 - No composer listed, although obviously 20th century. Piano fireworks. 5. Act II Nella... - Gaetano Donizetti. A lovely operatic solo by Montserrat Caballe. Live recording including applause (and coughing). 6. Toccate - Girolamo Frescobaldi 7. The Seasons - Tchaikovsky 8. Laudibus in Sanctis - William Byrd 9. Barcarolla - Henri Vieuxtemps 10. While they've us some pretty mediocre albums in the past, they've started turning out some pretty good samplers. I was rather pleasantly surprised with the "Linn Records Classical Sampler" (download it if you get a chance, please) and this one is just as good - maybe even better. The awful (but not to surprising!) truth is that if you want really good stuff, you need to get your wallet out. So, these albums aren't listened to with nearly the same amount of pleasure as the ones I actually pay something for. But, hey, this album just isn't bad for a free sampler. It features two of England's finest orchestras: the London Symphony (England's very finest!) and the Royal Philharmonic. While probably around half the tracks will get dumped in my recycle bin sooner or later, some of them will be saved. While practically all the tracks here are Romantic or Modern stuff, my favorite track would have to be the one... If you want a CD, I'd recommend Schumann: Humoreske Op.20 / Studien fur den Pedalflugel Op.56 / Gesange der FruheOp.133. But there are others, too. 2: Luckily for those who care, Jubilant Syke's beautiful voice can be heard on a number of albums.
